Preteen Bedroom Makeover: Updating My Daughter’s Room for Middle School
There is something so bittersweet about watching your child grow up and realizing their space needs to grow with them.
My daughter is getting ready to go into middle school, and I knew it was finally time to update her bedroom from a little girl’s room into a cozy preteen room that feels more like her now. When we first moved into our home, we painted her bedroom a pinkish-purple color. It was cute for that season of life, but she has grown so much since then, and she was ready for something brighter, softer, and more neutral.
So we decided to give her room a full refresh.
I wanted to create a space she could enjoy now, but also a room that could grow with her through middle school, high school, and beyond. Something cozy, functional, neutral, and still sweet enough to feel like home.

For this makeover, we repainted the room, added a new washable rug from Amazon, brought in cozy bedding, pillows, curtains, shelves, and lots of little decor pieces to make the space feel finished.

Choosing a Neutral Paint Color
The first big change in her room was the paint color.
Her walls were previously a pink-purple color, and while it worked when she was younger, she wanted something more neutral and bright this time around. We chose Sherwin Williams Alabaster, which is one of our favorite paint colors throughout our home.
Alabaster is such a pretty soft white. It feels warm, clean, and neutral without being too stark. It also goes with just about any decor style, which makes it perfect for a room that may change over the years.
Since she is entering a new season of life, I really wanted the room to feel calm and fresh. The white walls instantly made the space feel brighter, cleaner, and more open.
Adding a Cozy Washable Rug

One of my favorite pieces from this room makeover is the new area rug.
I ordered a washable area rug from Amazon in a brown patterned color, and I absolutely love it. It is so soft, foldable, and easy to move around. Once we got it in place, it really helped ground the whole room and made everything feel more cozy.
Getting it under the bed was definitely a challenge, but once it was down, it was so worth it.
The rug has a backing that helps it stay in place on the floor, and it feels really comfortable under your feet.
I love that it adds pattern and warmth without overpowering the room. It still keeps everything neutral, but it gives the space a finished, cozy feeling.
Creating a Better Bedroom Layout

After the rug was in place, we started figuring out the layout.
Her vanity went beside her bed, and her desk went along the wall. I wanted the room to feel functional for this next stage of life. She needed a place to get ready, a place to do schoolwork, and a cozy place to relax and read.
This room is not huge, so making the layout work was really important. I wanted everything to feel intentional without making the room feel crowded.
The goal was to give her a few different zones:
- a cozy sleeping area
- a desk and homework area
- a vanity and getting ready area
- a reading and book storage area
Creating these little areas helped the room feel so much more useful for her age and for this new season she is stepping into.
Hanging Shelves for Books and Decor
My daughter loves to read, so shelves were a must.
I added wood shelves with gold brackets to give her extra storage and display space. We originally planned to hang four shelves beside her bed, but once we started putting them up, we realized that three shelves fit the space better. So I ended up keeping three and returning the extra board.
That is one thing I always try to remind myself during home projects: sometimes the plan changes once you see things in the actual space, and that is okay.
The shelves beside her bed are perfect for books and little decor pieces. Then we added two shelves above her desk for more decorative items and things she wants to display.
The shelves ended up being so spacious, and I love how they turned out. They add height to the room and make the walls feel more finished without taking up floor space.
Swapping Out Small Details
One of the smaller updates I made was changing out the old light switch and outlet covers.
The room still had some of the original plastic covers, so I picked up a few new ones from Hobby Lobby. I found a black outlet cover and a gold light switch cover. Ideally, I would have loved for them all to match, but they only had one gold one left.
Eventually, I would like to swap them all to gold, but even this little change made the room feel more updated.
Sometimes the smallest details make such a big difference in a room makeover. Things like outlet covers, curtain rods, pillows, lamps, shelves, and little decor pieces may not seem major on their own, but once they are all together, they help the room feel complete.
Making the Room Feel Cozy and Grown Up

My biggest goal for this makeover was to give her a room that felt more grown up, but still cozy and personal.
I did not want it to feel too adult or too plain. She is still a kid, but she is also entering that preteen stage where her style is changing. I wanted the room to reflect that.
We kept the color palette soft and neutral, but added texture through the bedding, rug, pillows, curtains, greenery, shelves, and cozy lighting. The room now feels brighter, calmer, and much more like a space she can grow into.
It still has her personality, but it feels a little more mature.
Her Reaction to the Finished Room
When my daughter saw her room completely finished, she absolutely loved it.
I honestly cannot keep her out of there now, which makes me so happy. That was the whole point of this makeover — to create a space she enjoys being in.
As a mom, it feels really special to give her a room that feels like her. A place where she can read, relax, get ready, do homework, and just have her own cozy little space.
This makeover took a lot of work, but seeing how much she loves it made every bit of it worth it.
Preteen Bedroom Makeover Before and After
This room started as a sweet little girl’s room with pink-purple walls, and now it feels brighter, softer, and more grown up.
The Alabaster white paint made the biggest difference in making the room feel fresh and neutral. Then the rug, bedding, shelves, curtains, pillows, and decor helped bring everything together.
It is still cozy and fun, but now it feels like a room she can grow with through middle school, high school, and beyond.
Here is the before and after!

Final Thoughts
This room makeover was such a sweet project for me.
It was more than just painting walls and decorating a bedroom. It felt like marking a new season as my daughter gets ready to enter middle school. Her room now feels bright, cozy, functional, and ready to grow with her through the next few years.
I hope this makeover gives you inspiration if you are updating your child’s room, creating a preteen bedroom, or trying to make a space feel more grown up without losing that cozy, personal feeling.
